The apical resection is indicated only after failure of nonsurgical endodontic treatment and retreatment
The apical resection is a surgical procedure through which are removed both the top of the tooth root and the surrounding tissues, if infected. The apical resection is indicated only after failure of nonsurgical endodontic treatment and retreatment.
The apical resection is indicated when a root treatment failed to cure a granuloma or a radicular cyst, or when, during a treatment the needle broke on the root canal and it could not be removed by a special endodontic procedure. Practically, apical resection is the last attempt to save the tooth before removing it.
The surgery is performed under local anesthesia or under general when patients are anguished, because the surgeon needs them to cooperate, also under anesthesia patient does not feel pain. The surgery is performed on the dental chair in sterilized atmosphere, with sterilized tools and equipment.
An apical resection removes the part of the root which lies deepest into the jawbone,in order to reach the infected part of the bone .The infected tissue is wholely removed. After removal, a small plug is put in to fill the gap. New-formed cavity is ozon–treated in order to obtain full aseptic zone.
